UPDATE: Money officially transferred for Wor-Wic scholarship fund

County leaders have voted to formally transfer money set aside for the Wor-Wic Community College scholarship fund from ‘contingency’ to the Community Foundation; however, it’s several thousand dollars less than what was initially approved.
212,000 dollars were voted to be moved to the Community Foundation fund, which will go toward students who met the threshold of receiving free tuition from Wor-Wic.
In July, the county initially presented a check for the 265,000 dollars.
John Cannon, president of the Wicomico County Council, says Monday’s formal transfer is more in line with the number of students the scholarship would actually apply to.
A number of council members voiced their concerns Monday, saying the final numbers “should have been worked out” before approving the funds.
Council Vice-President At-Large Matt Holloway called it “ridiculous to take back a check” already presented; however, Cannon says this move does not mean the county is not committed to the initial 265,000 dollars.
The remaining 53,000 dollars will stay in contingency which means Wor-Wic officials could access it should they need it for this scholarship.
“I don’t see how this is going to impact any of the students,” says Cannon. “We know there’s a limited amount of students who’s projected by the Wor-Wic community college and we’re anticipating that these funds will more than cover that amount.”
