Plans for rail connecting Delaware and Maryland
A transportation study is now complete for a new commuter rail between Maryland and Delaware.
The research took a look at potential ridership and the demand for a rail system.
The train would run approximately 20 miles long connecting Perryville, Maryland and Newark, Delaware.
47 ABC spoke with Dave Gula, a planner at the Wilmington Area Planning Council.
Gula said that it would make the commute easier for employees traveling as well as tourists wanting to travel to Baltimore or Washington, D.C.
He said it makes complete sense to connect the SEPTA and MARC rails.
“When we go down to Perryville, we see roughly a third or quarter to a third of the parking lot has Delaware license plates in it. And they're getting there for early trains. And if you look at the parking lot in Newark, Delaware you see a lot of Maryland license plates,” Gula said.
“So the idea that the trains could help create that connection and these folks wouldn't have to drive as far is something that we've been looking at for a long time in numerous studies.”
Gula added that the project could potentially be completed in the next three years but he thinks it will take longer.
