Cambridge Sewage System Overflows Into Choptank Marina
CAMBRIDGE, Md. – The City of Cambridge says a small amount of sewage overflow made its way into the Choptank Marina after a system backup on Monday.
At 12:30 p.m. on Jun. 29, authorities say a system backup occurred after the Trenton Street Pumping Station was temporarily shut down. The overflow occurred at two locations where sewage surcharged the line and seeped out of two manholes onto Water Street, at Vue de Leau and Mill streets. The City estimates that less than 500 gallons were released from the two manholes.
While the overflow was repaired within two hours through the pumping station’s backup pump, a small amount of the overflow made it into the marina area of the Choptank River. The area is being tested for bacteria on Tuesday, Jun. 30. The overflow was reported to the Maryland Department of the Environment, as well as the Dorchester County Health Department. Officials say there is no impact to the public drinking water supply.
The other affected areas have been cleaned, and lime was spread in the area on Monday afternoon. Signs were posted at the locations of the discharges, and a public notice was placed on the City’s website.
Construction of the new Trenton Street Sewage Pumping Station is underway, and is expected to be complete in approximately 18 months.
