Salisbury University students react to Canvas hack
Delmarva, – University students continue with studies after personal data was threatened to be exposed by hackers.
On May 7, Canvas, an online education platform to help students track their school assignments, has experienced a cybersecurity attack that threatens to leak personal information of millions of students and teachers if a hefty ransom is not paid. The site was placed under maintenance and restricted users from logging back in, potentially hindering students from viewing study materials or submitting important assignments.
“My history professor decided to extend a few of our assignments a day later so we cold have extra time because of the shutdown.” says Alyvia Pasiak, Freshman at Salisbury University.
Upon hearing that the site was hacked, Freshman, Amanda Trivett said, “It does concern me that some personal information was leaked. I mean, personally especially personal billing information would be like my most sensitive worry or concern, which most of that is through Salisbury’s infrastructure.”
Service was eventually restored to the site and students were free to use the site as normal. Despite the security breach, students still felt comfortable using the site.
Salisbury University spokesperson, Jason Rhodes said that the university and it’s students were “minimally affected”.
As of this report, no statement has been made regarding those responsible for the cyber attack.
