On May 28 at 1:47 p.m., the Allen, Fruitland, and Princess Anne Volunteer Fire Companies, alongside the Salisbury Fire Department, responded to an abandoned house on South Upper Ferry Road in Eden. The property owner and workers were burning a large brush pile near the abandoned residence when it ignited.
A total of 30 firefighters worked for half an hour to extinguish the blaze. Water used to extinguish the fire was provided by the Allen Auxiliary.
The total damage to the structure and its contents is estimated to be valued at $25,000.
The Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal responded to the scene to investigate the preliminary cause of the fire, which has been deemed accidental. However, the case was referred to Wicomico County Code Enforcement, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources-Forest Service, and the Maryland Department of the Environment-Air and Radiation Division for possible violations of applicable codes and ordinances.
