Maryland Coastal Bays Program working on stream restoration project
BERLIN, Md. – Maryland Coastal Bays working on a new stream restoration project for the Newport Bay. There will be a public meeting that will be held on April 29th, in partnership with the town of Berlin, to present plans for the project.
It’s all part of an effort to restore the Newport Bay, which is being funded by the Whole Watershed Act.
Reshaping the stream channel is how Maryland Coastal Bays aims to enhance stormwater control. Newport Bay partnership coordinator, Jessica McIntosh, says they want to rework every aspect of the bay.
”The stream restoration is one piece of that. We have other aspects to the project. We’re working on marsh restoration, other storm-water improvement efforts to kind of take this problem holistically.”
The Newport Bay has received the lowest health score for the past several years in Maryland Coastal Bays’ annual report card. In 2025, the bay received a C minus.
The meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. at the Berlin Library.
