Emergency officials offer safety tips during severe weather

SALISBURY,  Md. – We’ve seen our fair share of bad weather so far this summer. And now, emergency officials are offering some important safety tips for residents if you ever find yourself caught in some lightening, a thunderstorm, or a tornado. Officials tell 47 ABC that these types of severe weather occurrences are actually all related to one another. They say both lightening and tornadoes are often associated with thunderstorms. And the best thing to do is to go inside so you can get out of harms way. A phrase they’re telling people to remember is this: When thunder roars, go indoors. They also say that in the event of a tornado, in which you can’t get inside someplace safe, you should find the nearest ditch and lay as low as possible.

“If you’re caught outside in lightening stay away from trees and then crouch down and cover your head. The key to all of them is listen to the weather and what it’s telling you to do. And the most important thing is to go into a secure location if you can,” said Director for the Wicomico County Department of Emergency Services, David Shipley.
