Weather Tidbits: Tropical Climatology

The frequency of tropical cyclones is discussed in this Weather Tidbits. Tropical storms are minimal from May to July based on historical records from 1851 to 2018. Data shows that the frequency of tropical storms historically goes up 6 times from the beginning to the end of August and 7 times by the peak of hurricane season in early to mid September. This trend is not just for tropical storms but hurricanes too. Storms are gradually decrease the rest of September and October; before dropping back to similar levels from the early season, as the season ends in November. Historically, no major hurricanes have formed in the Atlantic before July 1st. The frequency is very low through late August; with the peak taking place in September which continues into early October.
