Weather Tidbits: Perihelion

The 1st astronomical event of 2021 is the main headline of this Weather Tidbits. The perihelion or the Earth’s closest point to the sky occurred on January 2nd, 2021. The Earth is 3 million miles closer to the sun during the perihelion than the aphelion which takes place in early July. The reason winter is shorter in the Northern Hemisphere is due to the perihelion. The Earth is moving at its fastest in its orbit due to its tilt of 23.5 degrees at this moment. The reason for the perihelion being 2 weeks from the December Solstice is due to the eccentricity (difference of Earth’s orbital shape from a perfect circle).
