Weather Tidbits: Cloud Cover Terminology

The clouds cover the sky in this Weather Tidbits. Cloud cover describes the average sky condition based on the percentage or fraction of the sky covered by opaque (not transparent clouds). The National Weather Service uses fractions by eights to determine cloud cover. Daytime skies can range from sunny, mostly sunny, partly sunny, mostly cloudy and cloudy. Skies at night go from clear, mostly clear, partly cloudy, mostly cloudy and cloudy. The most debatable cloud cover is partly sunny and partly cloudy, which mean the same, but some meteorologists think partly sunny is more cloud cover than partly cloudy.
