Retired teacher charged in connection with nearly 30-year-old sex abuse case in Del.
A man was arrested after police say he had sex with a former student athlete multiple times during his tenure as a teacher in the Capital School District.
The Dover Police Department says on Wednesday, 73-year-old Carl Fennell turned himself in to authorities in connection with a nearly 30-year-old sex abuse case. Law enforcement says he was employed by the Capital School District from 1969 to 2001.
Authorities say on July 11, detectives were contacted by the victim (now 43-years-old) who reported that the retired teacher used to be her tennis mentor beginning at age 14. Police say the victim reported that between July of 1989 and May of 1990, Fennell would take her to the tennis courts at Delaware Technical and Community College, on Campus Drive, to use the courts for lessons. According to the report, after each practice, Fennell would have the victim perform sexual acts on him in a vehicle.
After receiving the victim's statement, Dover PD reports that Fennell agreed to an interview with detectives after he was contacted by police. During the interview, detectives say he admitted that he did mentor the victim during the time frame of the allegations. Police say Fennell also admitted that the sexual acts happened at least 10 times, but not more than 20 while the victim was 14 and 15-years-old.
Police say on Monday, Fennell was indicted by a grand jury on 10 counts of unlawful sexual intercourse first degree.
