New Downtown Salisbury construction underway

Some major changes are coming to Downtown Salisbury as they continue to revitalize the area.

Officials say that in the next few years the area near the downtown will look different with new shops, restaurants and apartments.

The new construction is expected to take place at the parking lot across from the library.

According to spokesperson Chris Demone, because the developers will be removing the parking spaces, they will be constructing in an underground parking garage.

According to Mayor Jake Day, the city has been getting a lot of interest from developers about coming to the area and that Salisbury is quickly becoming a city in high demand.

"We've gone from a time where we had 20 surface parking lots that the city government owned to a handful, and all of the others are under agreement with developers and developers are moving forward with their projects," said Day.

"This is the best Downtown has ever done, and it's the healthiest it's ever been," said Day.

Demone said the businesses that come to the area will  be able to use high-speed fiber optic internet.  The cables for that are already being laid down during the current main street construction.
