Del. man charged in connection with assault on bicyclist

A man was arrested after troopers say he ran a man off the road and assaulted him in Delaware.

Delaware State Police say on Sunday, around 11:12 AM, troopers responded to the area of Plantations Road, south of Cedar Grove Road for an assault complaint. Once on scene, troopers say they encountered a witness who reported that he was driving on Plantations Road when he saw a man beating a cyclist with an object, and immediately called 911. Police say the victim, a 50-year-old Milton man, remained a t the scene  advised he was riding his bike on Plantations Road when a white work truck got really close to him and almost ran him off the road. 

According to the report, the subject then drove by him and blew a loud horn next to him while he was riding his bike. Authorities say the victim was startled and punched the driver's side window of the truck, not causing any damage. At that point, law enforcement says the driver stopped his vehicle in the middle of the roadway, got out, and grabbed an object from the bed of the truck, and attempted to hit the 50-year-old victim in the head.

Police say the victim blocked the object with his forearm. He sustained a laceration and declined medical treatment at the scene. 

DSP reports that driver of the truck fled the scene and he was located in the Heritage Village development. Police say 33-year-old Matthew McDavid was standing by the vehicle when he was taken into custody. Authorities say the object used ot hit the victim, a large black wire/cable, was recovered from the truck

McDavid was charged with possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, assault second degree, and unattended motor vehicle.

He was later released on $3,001 unsecured bond.
