Community center offers new resources to Accomack Co. residents

Downtown Chincoteague is getting a brand new community center and construction is underway.

The organizer tells 47 ABC that there's already a community center in the area but that one seems more like a convention center.

This new place will be on a smaller scale for residents to be able to hang out.

Non-profits will also be able to use it for meetings. It also offers a commercial kitchen. This location will also provide housing, which can come in handy in cases of emergency as well.

But that's not all it's doing. Organizer David Landsberger says, "One of the big problems on this island is that we used to have a senior center and it closed down due to lack of funding. So we have arrange to get funding operate as a senior center for a couple of hours a day."

Despite all the construction, they're trying to maintain and preserve the building's look since it's pretty historic. They're hoping to have it up and running by September 1, 2018.
