Officials warn to stay away from downed power lines
The power of this wind is not only bringing down tree after tree– it's also bringing down power lines which are extremely dangerous. Officials are urging everyone to stay away from those downed lines. They say overhead power lines can carry more than 500,000 volts. They also say that touching one of the lines can provide a path for electricity to the ground that can hurt or kill you. Officials say you must assume all power lines are energized and dangerous.
"That's really one of our big messages today to our customers is please stay away from down wires and assume any wires that you see on the ground is energized don't touch it don't go near it, please stay away from it," said Strategic Communications Manager for Delmarva Power Jake Sneeden.
Officials say you should stay away from anything that is touching a line like a tree, fence or vehicle. If you see a power line that's down immediately call your local officials and report it.
