Delmarva law enforcement team up for St. Patrick’s Day impaired driving checkpoints

One of the most celebrated holidays is almost here. Green beer will be flowing and many will be partying for St. Patrick's Day.

But local and state police, from all three states, will also be out and about.

The Maryland Department of Transportation has joined efforts with law enforcement in Maryland, Virginia, and Delaware. 21 agencies from across Delmarva will team up for border-to-border coverage on Route 13 and Route 113.

There will be five DUI checkpoints Saturday night. Two in Maryland, two in Delaware, and one in Virginia.

This new effort is imperative to stop drinking and driving. In 2016, 522 people were killed on Maryland's roads. In 2016, there were 54 DUI-related fatal crashes. In Virginia, there were 248 alcohol-related fatalities in 2017.

We're told if you decide to go out, make you sure have a plan for a safe and sober driver.
