Former Virginia State trooper pleads guilty to falsifying public records

Officials say that a former Virginia State trooper pleaded guilty to forging public records in Accomack County, on Friday.

According to the Prince William County Commonwealth Attorney, 44-year-old Johnny Godwin, pleaded guilty to three misdemeanor counts of falsifying public records.

He was sentenced to 12 months on each charge, but the sentence was suspended. Godwin also received three years of probation, a 100 hours of community service and he is prohibited from holding any office of public trust.

Godwin is accused of submitting false summonses that he never issued to his superior. The case was tried in Accomack County, but it was prosecuted by the Prince William Commonwealth Attorney because of conflict of interest.

During the trial, officials noted why he would do what he did after 20 years of service.
