One dead in Ellendale hit and run crash; investigation ongoing

Authorities are investigating a hit and run incident after, they say a woman died after being hit while walking near a roadway, in Sussex County.

Delaware State Police say on Thursday, just before 11:00 PM, an unidentified driver was traveling northbound on South Old State Road (CR 213), north of Robbins Road (CR 579), in an unknown vehicle, in Ellendale. Troopers report that a 53-year-old Ellendale woman was walking near the edge of the roadway. According to the report, as the vehicle was approaching the pedestrian, the vehicle's right side mirror and possibly front headlight struck the woman. The woman was then reportedly thrown on to the grass on the side of the road. 

DSP says after hitting the pedestrian, the unknown vehicle fled northbound from the scene.

According to authorities, the 53-year-old pedestrian was removed by EMS and taken to Milford Memorial Hospital,  where she was pronounced dead a short time later. The woman was reportedly wearing dark clothing and was not carrying a light at the time of the crash. The victim's name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.

South Old State Road was apparently shut down for approximately three hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
