Deputies: Woman charged with DUI while alone during a traffic stop
A woman is facing a DUI charge, after deputies say she tried to tell them she was not the driver during a traffic stop, in Wicomico County.
The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says on Monday, around 11:03 PM, a deputy pulled over a Hyundai after the deputy noticed the driver did not stop for a stop sign and almost hit the deputy's patrol car, in Delmar.
According to the report, after stopping the vehicle in the 1200 block of Pine Street, the deputy watched the driver, 24-year-old Emily Cantwell of Salisbury, slide over into the passenger seat from behind the wheel. Authorities say Cantwell tried to tell the deputy that she was not driving the vehicle. Officials report that Cantwell was alone in the vehicle. At that point, law enforcement noticed a strong smell of alcohol and and other physical signs that suggested that Cantwell was under the influence of alcohol.
According to the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office, sobriety tests were issued, and Cantwell was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. Cantwell reportedly refused to submit to a breath test during further processing back at the sheriff's office.
After further investigation, deputies learned that Cantwell was driving the vehicle with only a expired learner's permit. She was issued citations and later released pending a future court date.
