A new J.M. Tawes Technology and Career Center will be coming to Somerset County, according to officials.

Somerset County Public Schools say that the new J.M. Tawes building will be built on the property of the existing J.M. Tawes/Board of Education and Somerset Intermediate on the south side of Tawes Campus Drive.

The groundbreaking is set for October 24 but specific details have not yet been determined. The entire project budget including design and construction is reportedly $42 million.

About $7 million is being provided through a U.S.D.A. Rural Development loan to Somerset County.

The remaining $35 million will be funded through the Maryland Public School Construction Program. The new building will be able to accommodate up to 400 students per shift. The building is expected to open for the 2019-2020 school year.
