Boardwalk Swim competition honors former Ocean City Beach Patrol Captain, July 8

In honor of a former local beach patrol captain, Ocean City will once again host their annual boardwalk swim.

The Ocean City Beach Patrol will host the Captain Robert S. Craig Annual Boardwalk Swim and Ginny Craig Quarter Mile Boardwalk Swim on July 8, at 6 PM on 14th Street and the Boardwalk.

During the Boardwalk Swim, participants will swim a measured mile with the prevailing current, and 400 meters along the coast for the Ginny Craig Swim. Both event routes will finish at 14th Street and the Boardwalk. Ocean City Beach Patrol says competitors will be watched by surf rescue technicians who will be in the water in rescue boats and on the beach.

Competition officials say the event is named in honor of Captain Robert Craig who provided 52 years of service as the Captain of the Ocean City Beach Patrol, from 1935 to 1986. Officials say Captain Craig is known for changing the recruiting  process, requiring each person interested in being a part of the beach patrol to complete a written application, and physical assessment.

Registration for the Captain Robert Craig Annual Boardwalk Swim and Ginny Craig Swim can be completed online. Participants who complete their registration by July 5 will receive a discounted registration price. Competitors will be required to check-in, pay a registration fee, and complete the required paperwork, before being allowed to participate on the day of the event. On-site registration begins a 5 PM.

All participants will receive a t-shirt. Medals and certificates will be awarded to the top three finishers of both competitions.
