First white marlin of the year could be worth $15,000
Officials in Ocean City say the tradition of awarding a $5,000 prize to the angler who catches the first white marlin of the season will continue.
In addition, an extra $5,000 will be awarded to the angler by a coalition formed to celebrate the tradition, officials said. On top of the combined $10,000 prize, if the angler is a member of the Ocean City Marlin Club or on board a Marlin Club member boat, the Club will award $5,000 more, bringing the potential value of the first white marlin to $15,000.
"We are proud to continue the tradition of offering a cash prize to the angler who reels in the first white marlin of the season," Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan said.
Officials say the winning angler will also be entered into the HUK Big Fish Classic tournament to be held in Ocean City in July.
Earlier this year, plans were in the works to end the yearly cash prize by the city for the first white marlin. This decision, however, was reversed.
