Caesar Rodney girls hop on IR, hang on for Henlopen title
The Caesar Rodney girls soccer team won their third straight Henlopen Championship on Thursday afternoon, defeating Indian River 2-1 on the campus of Sussex Academy in Georgetown.
After 17 scoreless minutes, CR struck twice in less than a minute's time. The first goal was a long strike off the foot of senior back Maci Aglio. The ball looked long past the goal, but dipped inside of the top bar and just out of the reach of IR keeper Fabrea McCray. Less than a minute later, junior Kimberly Glasser hit a perfectly placed header into the corner of the net. Both teams would play the rest of the half scoreless, leading CR into half with a 2-0 advantage.
In the second half, McCray would hold her team together and keep the defecit at just two after numerous marvelous saves. Her effort would be rewarded when with 6 minutes to go, Indians sophomore Isabella Keith got a breakaway goal. Despite a strong push inside the last 5 minutes, the Riders back line was able to hold off a thin Indians attack, without the services of all-time goal leader Madison Hogsten due to a first half knee injury.
Both teams move to the state tournament, with CR competing in the D1 bracket, while IR looks to return to a state championship game in the D2 division.
