DOC in process of improving security at ECI
Since the Eastern Correctional Institution racketeering scandal the Department of Corrections has upped their security.
The scandal resulted in 80 people being federally indicted including correctional officers who were charged with smuggling contraband into the prison.
When the indictments were handed down state officials vowed to make the necessary improvements to ensure such an event would not happen again.
DOC secretary Stephen Moyer said although they can't say much about the improvements they are underway.
"We've also standardized our entrances we are in the process right now of purchasing and implementing and we're doing some pilots and some cell phone detection equipment and other electronics that will help us keep contraband out of the facility," Moyer said.
Moyer said as soon as the new systems are installed they'll be more forthcoming with information as to what they are.
Despite that racketeering scandal Moyer said ECI is one of the best run prisons in Maryland.
