A new deputy commissioner has been named for the Delaware Department of Correction, officials with the department said Tuesday morning.

Commissioner Perry Phelps announced Alan Grinstead's appointment to the position as deputy commissioner. Officials say Grinstead was promoted from his position as bureau chief of Community Corrections, a title he had held since 2013. He had also previously served as a deputy bureau chief and director of Probation and Parole before that.

"Alan's 28 years of experience in the Bureau of Community Corrections will help our concentrated reentry efforts and ensure the department continues its mission of providing rehabilitation to offenders in our custody," Commissioner Phelps said. "I am honored to have him serve beside me in this role as we work together to move the DOC forward."

Officials say Grinstead will now be serving as a member of the commissioner's executive staff and provide oversight to the department's bureaus.

Deputy Commissioner Grinstead began his career as a Probation and Parole officer in 1989 following his graduation with a criminal justice degree from the University of Delaware.
