Dover man passes away from injuries sustained in early March crash

Delaware State Police say a Dover man died on Tuesday from injuries he sustained in a two-vehicle collision that happened earlier this month.

At around 9:18 PM on March 4th, police say John D. Downs, 75, was driving a 2007 Honda Ridgeline and stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Chestnut Grove Road and Forest Avenue in Dover. Downs reportedly pulled out from the stop sign to cross Forest Avenue and was struck on the driver's side door by a westbound-traveling 2008 Jeep Cherokee.

Downs was transported to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital and admitted in stable condition, officials said. Later he was transferred to Bayhealth Milford Memorial Hospital, ultimately succumbing to his injuries on March 21st.

Downs and the passenger in the Honda, his 75-year-old wife, were both properly restrained. His wife was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Jeep's driver was similarly properly restrained and treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries.

Neither alcohol nor drugs played a factor in the accident, investigators said.
