UPDATE: Ballistic Vest Wearing Fugitive Arrested After Pursuit Through Salisbury

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - A wanted fugitive is in custody, after reportedly leading police on a pursuit through Wicomico County, while wearing a bulletproof vest. Maryland State Police say on Thursday, Members of the Maryland State Apprehension Team and the State Police Criminal Enforcement Division were searching for 38-year-old Deshawn Darling of Salisbury, who was wanted on a violation of probation warrant from Dorchester County and warrants from Delaware.

According to the report, around 9:15 AM, Troopers found Darling leaving his house in a Dodge van, and attempted to stop him on Route 13 near Carroll Street. Police say instead of stopping, Darling pulled onto Route 13, and deliberately rammed an unmarked MSP vehicle, that had its lights on, before driving away. Multiple law enforcement agencies followed Darling, both south and north on Route 13 and surrounding roads.

At one point, Police say a man identifying himself as Darling called 911, and told the operator that he had a gun, and was going to shoot himself. Troopers continued to follow Darling into the parking lot of a store on N. Salisbury Boulevard, where he was arrested without further incident.

During the arrest, Troopers and Police Officers reportedly found that Darling was wearing a bullet-proof vest, and that there was a handgun in plain sight inside of the van. A search of the van is reportedly planned for later Thursday.

During the pursuit, Police say a minor crash happened between a police vehicle, and a civilian vehicle. A second crash apparently happened when Fruitland Police Department put out stop sticks, and the suspect swerved to avoid them, into on-coming traffic, which caused an on-coming driver to swerve away from the suspect and into a curb and parked car. There were reportedly no injuries in either incident.

"When Fruitland Police were attempting to deploy stop sticks, the suspect tried to avoid those stop sticks...drove into oncoming traffic. A motorist headed into the opposite direction swerved to avoid him and struck a curb and a parked car." Explained Maryland State Police spokesperson Greg Shipley.

Darling has been charged with multiple crimes including first and second degree assault, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, as well as related firearm, drug and traffic charges.

Darling is currently being held at Wicomico County Detention Center. Maryland State Police say their investigation is continuing at this time.
