DSP Investigates Police Impersonation Incident Near Seaford

Posted: Updated:

SEAFORD, Del. - Police are looking for information, after a man reportedly posed as a Police Officer, and pulled a woman over.

Delaware State Police say on Monday around 10:45 PM, a woman was driving on Coverdale Road near Hastings Farm Road, when a vehicle started to follow her. The vehicle eventually turned on emergency police style lights, after which the woman pulled over. According to the report, the suspect, described as a light skinned black male, got out of a large four door sedan, and approached the woman while wearing a handgun in a holster on his hip and a radio. Police say the suspect asked the woman about her erratic driving, and during the conversation the woman says she started to get suspicious and told the suspect that she was going to call 911. The suspect then apparently immediately fled to his vehicle, and drove away onto Coverdale Road.

Police say if you think you have been or are being contacted by a Police impersonator, be cautious, and turn on your flashers while driving the speed limit, before calling 911 on your cell phone. DSP say inform the 911 dispatcher that you are concerned, and don't pull over until the dispatcher can confirm that you are being pulled over by a Police Officer. If you don't have a cell phone, or the dispatcher can't confirm that you are being pulled over by an Officer, drive carefully, to a safe, well lit place, such as a Police Department or the parking lot of a busy store. Police also suggest contact the issuing agency, if you think you are issued suspicious documents, and they can verify their legitimacy. Police remind residents to report anything suspicious.

Troopers say they are continuing to investigate Monday's incident. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Troop 5 at 302-337-1090 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-TIP-3333. Tips can also be submitted to the DSP Mobile Crime App, texting DSP to CRIMES (274637), or by visiting the TipSubmit website.
