New Sidewalk Assures Safety For Wicomico County Students

Posted: Updated:

WICOMICO COUNTY, Md - Completed in Wicomico County, just in time for the first day of school is a major sidewalk project.  Monday, City and County leaders cut the ribbon on a new sidewalk constructed along College Avenue and Beaglin Park Drive.

The mile long project made possible through the Safe Routes to School initiative cost about $200,000. Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt says this new sidewalk and the speed cameras already in place are getting the necessary attention from motorists.

"People are slowing down in the school zones.  Now they're paying more attention to the fact that there are children walking all around the different areas.  Our students, especially the ones who walk to school, are going to be much safe than they've ever been before," says Pollitt.

Wicomico County Public Works says they are now looking forward to their next project.  They hope to gain federal funding by this Fall in order to work on new sidewalks along South Division Street, and the intersection of Mill Street and College Avenue.
