No Charges Pending After Smyrna Pedestrian Accident

Posted: Updated:

SMYRNA, Del. - Police are looking for witnesses to crash in Smyrna involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. Smyrna Police Department says around 8:30 PM on Wednesday Officers responded to the intersection of South DuPont Boulevard and East Glenwood Avenue for reports of an accident involving a pedestrian.

Once on scene, Officers reportedly found a 35-year-old female laying in the roadway. The woman was apparently treated at the scene, before being airlifted to Christiana Hospital by the Delaware State Police aviation unit for a broken leg and injuries to her head.

Police say their investigation showed that the woman had been trying to cross the southbound lands, not in the provided crosswalk signal, and was hit head-on by a vehicle. There are reportedly no charges pending for the driver at this time, but Police are still asking any witnesses of the incident to contact them at 302-653-9217.

Smyrna Police are reminding residents to use caution when crossing busy roadways, and offer the following tips.
•Look left, right, then left again for vehicular traffic before stepping onto the roadway.
•Yield to any approaching vehicles while crossing even if you have the right of way. Oncoming vehicles may reach you faster than you anticipate.
•Make eye contact with drivers to ensure that they see you.
•Keep to the right of the crosswalk, and be patient and alert when crossing the street.
•Walk across the street, never run.
•Obey all traffic signals and use the pedestrian signal button at intersections.
•Cross the street only when the green "Walk" light is on. Do not begin crossing if the red "Don't Walk" or upraised hand is flashing or steady.
•Be especially careful of vehicles that may turn right on red or turn left at an intersection. Drivers may be busy looking out for other vehicles instead of pedestrians.
