Communication Improvements At Route 50 Bridge Review

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Weeks after a malfunction on the Route 50 draw bridge caused up to five hours of backups in and out of Ocean City, the town is looking into improving how it communicates with the public during emergencies.

In a meeting last Friday, officials reviewed the town's response to that headache inducing traffic nightmare.

One lesson learned: there should be an easier way to access the number of public-private electronic message signs throughout town.

"Right now it's a lengthy process, it's quite time consuming, and the employees who utilize those signs aren't always working, so for us, one of the things that we learned was we need to give accessibility to employees who work 24/7," says Jessica Waters, spokesperson for Ocean City.

Waters says a crisis communications team is set to meet on September 3rd to discuss how the private sector can become more involved in emergency situations.

One new mode of communication during emergencies is Ocean City's radio station, 99.5 FM.
