Immigrant Children Find Refuge In Maryland

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND- Gang violence and poverty has plagued many Central American countries...some say, causing thousands of children to flee to the United States.

Tens of thousands of undocumented children have poured across the US Mexico border
Many landing hundreds of miles away, here in Maryland.

Executive Director of the Governor's Office for Children, Anne Sheridan says, "About two thousand eight hundred children arrived in Maryland and are living with their relatives."

The Easton based "Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center" has been helping to place children in homes across the shore for the past two years. However, before they reach our soil, these children have a long road to travel.

Director of the Chesapeake Multicultural Resource Center, Matthew Peters says,"The children are being sent, are getting transported to the border by what is known as coyotes, human traffickers, and then the system kind of takes it from there."

Then the U.S. government steps in, connecting children with family already in the country.
That's what happened with a woman who didn't want to be identified, her nephew is from Guatemala.

She says, "I got a phone call one day from Phoenix shelters asking if I was family..."

From there, her nephew moved in. Now, two years later, the 19 year old is living in Easton with a Green Card.

She continued, "He didn't have any opportunity in the country where we're from. He didn't have education or an opportunity to work, it's better that he's here now."
