Embattled Delaware Treasurer Withdrawing From Race

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Embattled state treasurer Chip Flowers says he is ending his re-election campaign, just days after his former deputy filed a police complaint charging him with harassment.

Flowers, who has had a rocky relationship with Delaware's Democratic Party establishment and faced a Sept. 9 primary contest, said Friday that he is quitting the race in a tear-filled announcement.

Flowers told The Associated Press before announcing his decision that he has done nothing wrong during his public service but was tired of having to defend himself from attacks by former deputy treasurer Erika Benner.

Benner filed a harassment complaint against Flowers last week following an encounter between Flowers and her son at a Fourth of July parade.

Benner resigned last year after repeated misuse of her state credit card for personal expenses.
