Teens Lead Youth Leadership Workshop

Posted: Updated:

47 ABC - The Youth Leadership Academy has invited over 50 students to their annual three-day workshop held at Salisbury University.

There are plenty of workshops devoted to youth development, so what sets the Youth Leadership Academy apart? Facilitator and Salisbury University professor Dr. George Whitehall describes it as a program for kids and by kids. Whitehead started this program nine years ago with his colleague Paula Morris.

Whitehead says, "The vision of this was to reach kids that aren't necessarily traditional leaders in schools."

Most of the staff is compromised of student volunteers, some of whom were once students of the academy themselves. Youth Action Team ("YAT") leaders start coordinating the summer program in January with Whitehead and Morris. They're in charge of almost everything from workshop themes to various activities such as public speaking lessons and team-building exercises.

One of the YAT leaders Dhratisha Chakborty, 15, tells us "I like programs to do with leadership and creativity and embracing your teenager-yness, I guess."

The program encourages its students to make goals for themselves, whether they're goals to be accomplished in the upcoming years or months.

James Whittington, 15, tells 47 ABC that he dreams of becoming a veterinarian one day. When asked about his current goals, he confidently said "'I'm not going to stand down for anything to keep me to hold down. I'm just going to keep fighting through it to make it through school and keep my head up."

This year's workshop wraps up on Wednesday.
