Milford Captures Big League Softball World Title

Posted: Updated:

Roxana, DE.- When Delaware's District I Big League Softball team defeated Walden, NY in the East Regional title game in Worcester, Massachusetts, they knew they were destined to complete their dreams of being World Champions.

That dream came true Saturday afternoon, playing just minutes from their stomping grounds in Milford. After defeating the Southwest Region Champions (Brownsville, TX) 9-1 on Friday, one familiar foe stood in their way, Delaware's Division III Champion and host team Laurel.

The game would be an instant classic as two of the best young pitchers in the country Regan Green and Shaina Reed. Green and Reed, both All-State pitchers in the high school ranks in Delaware, would battle it out scoreless for seven innings. After both teams remained scoreless after regulation, East would strike first blood in the top of the eighth. Whitney DeMora drew a walk to open up the inning, and was brought home for the first run of the game by catcher Cassetty Howerin's triple. That would be the only run East got, and needed. But things would get strange in the bottom of the eighth.

The bottom of the eighth featured Reed on the mound, surrendering a inning-opening double down the right field line courtesy of Alexis Hudson. Hudson pumped her fist dramatically from second base, attempting to draw up her team and crowd. Just as Hudson celebrated, the umpire signaled Hudson was out, and ordered her back to the dugout. The umpire ruled that upon hitting the ball, Hudson left the batter's box, and was declared automatically out. The ruling would prove costly as the next batter, Kaitlyn Slater, would blast one to the warning track, bouncing off the wall, a hit that most certainly would have scored Hudson. But with two outs, Reed would settle in and get Morgan Smith to fly out to left, making East World Champions.

Green went 8 innings, only giving up six hits and one earned. Reed, 8 innings, giving up seven hits, and no earned runs. Reed said Green and her have been competing since they were young and that she was "honored to get a win on such a great pitcher."
