Two Arrests Made In Dorchester Co.'s Largest Marijuana Bust

Posted: Updated:

HURLOCK, Md. - A massive drug bust goes down in Dorchester County as authorities seize hundreds of marijuana plants Friday, August 1st.

"This is the most sophisticated one I've ever come in contact with," says Dorchester County Sheriff James Phillips.

The elaborate operation spanned a one-story house, an adjacent garage, and an outdoor growing field, all part of a property at 4830 Milligantown Road in Hurlock.  After searching the house, a garage, and the area outside, police found 647 plants, ranging from seedlings up to plants 7-feet tall.

It wasn't only the yield that impressed police, but also the obvious care that had gone into the plants' growth.

"The thing that stood out to everybody there was the way that the environment was being controlled inside these rooms. They had dimmers, they had timers, they had trickle irrigation. Everything was being controlled so that everything was optimal for the growth of marijuana…and they were extraordinary plants," said Phillips.

Extraordinary plants with an extraordinary street value of $650,000.

Authorities arrested two men, 71-year-old Nguyen Binh and 47-year-old Ngyuen Behai Wan, who both lived at the house.

Sheriff Phillips says at this time, the reach of the operation is part of the ongoing investigation, adding "I don't know whether it was staying local or leaving this area. Certainly when you take an estimated 650 pounds of marijuana off the street in any area, that's going to have an impact on supply."

47 ABC spoke with one neighbor who moved in in 1991, when the former grow-house was nothing more than empty lot. She says the two men seemed like any ordinary neighbors, and she had no inkling whatsoever of what was going on next-door.

Police say no weapons were found but two vehicles were seized as part of the bust.

Binh and Wan were each held on $200,000 bond. According to Sheriff Phillips, someone posted both and the men were released.

As for the hundreds of plants, they are being kept in a secure, secret location. After being dried, they will be tested in a lab for evidence purposes, and then destroyed, likely in an open-air burn.
