Smyrna PD Breaks Ground On New Building

Posted: Updated:

SMYRNA, Del. - Some big changes are on the way to the Smyrna Police Department.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the station on Tuesday, to kickoff construction of a new police building, which will be built right next to their headquarters.

The project is getting funding support through a Rural Development Community Facility Program with the USDA that helps construct, extend, or enlarge essential community facilities for rural residents. Smyrna police say the expansion is huge for the department.

"We're going to be able to get everybody that works in the department, such as the special investigations unit, all housed under one building," says Chief Norman Wood, of the Smyrna Police Department. "Right now they're across town in another location because there's not enough room in our current building."

The new police department building is supposed to be up and running by June of 2015.
