Hickory, NC.- The Delmarva Shorebirds suffered their first four-game sweep of the season, with a 10-4 loss to the Hickory Crawdads, their fifth consecutive loss.
Delmarva starter Nick Cunningham was shelled allowing a career-high ten runs. Hickory started early with a five run bottom of the first, including a grand slam by second baseman Travis Demeritte. Demeritte leads the South Atlantic League with 21 homers on the season.
The Crawdads would get to Cunningham once more in the third. Luis Marte stepped up to plate with two outs and the bases loaded, and belted a bases-clearing double to centerfield. The Shorebirds' starter was pulled after the first two batters reached in the fourth inning, both scoring later in the inning, making it 10-1 Crawdads.
The offense came alive slightly for the Shorebirds but it was too little, too late. Anthony Vega hit his first home run as a Shorebird, with a solo blast in the seventh. Gregory Lorenzo would deliver a 2-RBI infield single in the eighth.
Shorebirds starter Nick Cunningham suffered his fourth straight loss, with Delmarva now having lost nine of their last ten. The Shorebirds look to travel back home for a seven-game home stand, starting with four against the Lakewood BlueClaws.
