Tornado Strikes Near Boston Massachusetts

An EF-2 tornado hit the suburbs of Boston on Monday morning with winds up to 120 mph. Specifically, it tore through Suffolk county and did the most damage in the town of Revere and Chelsea. Revere Mayor Daniel Rizzo says there are at least 65 homes and buildings damaged and about 13 homes that are now uninhabitable. Over 2,000 power outages were reported and a shelter was opened at a nearby middle school.

A Massachusetts tornado is rare, but they aren't unheard of across the state. According to data collected by the Tornado History Project (, 159 tornadoes were recorded in Massachusetts between 1950 and 2013. That's an average of nearly three tornadoes per year.

The National Weather Service in Boston says they've only issued three tornado warnings so far this year and that there's actually been a decline in violent tornadoes since the mid-20th century for their area. They added that they do expect to have one strong-to violent tornado per year.

This was the first time a tornado hit Suffolk county in over 50 years, and luckily there were no deaths.
