WIC Goes From Paper To Plastic

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - The Division of Public Health Women, Infants, and Children program,  better known as WIC, is making a big move from paper to plastic.

WIC is a program that is dedicated to providing nutritious foods for post-partum and pregnant women, and their children; and to access food stamps everyone uses paper vouchers.

Director of Delaware's Division of Public Health Karyl Rattay says "There are limitations to those. One is if they are stolen someone else can use them. If you use a voucher you must use the whole voucher when you purchase your food."

Now, the Delaware WIC program has received a grant of over $600,000 from the US Department of Agriculture that will allow all their families to use electric benefits transfers,  allowing much more flexibility with purchases and security.

Rattay continues,  "If a card is stolen, it won't be able to be used unless they have the personal identification code."

The new cards also present fewer difficulties to stores.

Russie Hamilton who is a store cashier explains, "It would make it a lot easier because the paper is pretty hard to deal with when you have a lot of customers you just swipe 06:03:13 and it'd be a lot better."

The WIC program hopes to have the EBT cards ready for use within the next two years.

The WIC program serves more than 19,000 low income families in Delaware. For more information visit dhss.delaware.gov.
