Northampton County Tornado

The National Weather Service confirmed yesterday that an EF-1 tornado touched down in Northampton County, Virginia. The tornado warning was issued at 8:20 AM when a waterspout over the Chesapeake Bay was picked up on doppler radar.

The waterspout formed a few miles west of the Cherrystone Campground and tracked eastward. As it tracked on land it formed into a tornado and hit the camp ground around 8:30 AM with winds as high as 100 miles per hour. Damage from the tornado includes downed and snapped trees and several destroyed trailers. Two people were killed and over 30 others were injured from this storm.

While the actual tornado hit the northern portion of the campground, other portions of the grounds were not spared from the storm. The NWS reports straight line wind damage and winds as high as 75 miles per hour. Straight line wind damage was also found south of the campground through Cape Charles and east of the campground through Cheriton. The wind downed trees and even overturned trailers on the camp ground.

Hail also fell on the campground and some surrounding areas. The NWS reports a hail swath of up to three quarters of a mile. Golf ball sized and even a few reports of baseball sized hail damaged crops.

As clean up continues, conditions are expected to be calm through the first part of the weekend. A round of severe weather may begin on Sunday evening. The Storm Prediction Center has placed the entire peninsula in the slight risk zone. This brings the threat of high winds and large hail on Sunday. Conditions improve significantly through the middle part of the work week with sunshine and comfortable temperatures.
