Birthing Tent Returns To DSF, Delivers Calf

Posted: Updated:

HARRINGTON, Del.- For the first time since 2009, the birthing center is back at the Delaware State Fair! And around 9:30 AM on Thursday morning, a bull calf was born on the fairgrounds! We're told it was an easy, 15 minute delivery and both the baby and mother are healthy and doing just fine! If you missed that delivery, no worries, there are several other cows that are pregnant and just about ready to give birth!

Ruthie Franczek, of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, says "As soon as the cows are dilated, then they progress into second stage labor which is active labor, and we're right behind them, examining them internally just like you would with a human."

If you want to learn more about the birthing process, head to the birthing center tent, located right next to the Quillen Arena. And keep an ear out for birthing announcements! Once the other cows are ready to give birth, we're told an announcement will be made through the intercom system, and you can also get notifications through the Delaware State Fair app on your cell phone!
