DE State Fair Hosts Livestock Extravaganza

Posted: Updated:

HARRINGTON, Del. - The Livestock Extravaganza is a huge event for livestock owners who show their animals, like Sergeant Tips and Lucky here, who will be competing tonight. It seems simple, but I learned today, that's not the case.

Beef cattle, sheep, swine, and meat goats, all competing for the Grand Champion title. Lauren Nickerson, Beef Cattle Owner, says "So that's like the top honor, so it's very exciting and nerve wracking."

So far throughout the fair, each of the animals had their individual competitions based on their breed. Animals were judge on showmanship, which looks at how the owner can control their livestock, and market, which looks at the animals best equipped for sale. Tuesday night, the top two winners of those competitions face off, but the hard work starts long before.

Nickerson says "So we get out steers in September, we rinse them every night do their hair do the correct feeding so it's just an everyday thing multiple hours a day." Shane Colbourne, Sheep Owner, adds "We set them up and walk them around to get their back legs stronger."

The day of the extravaganza, is all about the finishing touches.

Martha Williams, Swine Owner, says "Wash them in the wash rack, hose them down, they do wash them with a certain kind of soap for animals."

Despite months of tireless work, like most competitions, not everyone will come home a winner, but for some the "before" process, makes it worthwhile. Williams says "It's fun we enjoy it my husband gets involved with it, it's really a cool thing."
