National Ice Cream Day: St. Michaels Parlour Mixing Up Homemade Treats

ST. MICHAELS, Md. - July 20th is a big day. It's day four of the Delaware State Fair, 45 years ago, we landed on the moon, and it's National Ice Cream Day.

Folks were lined up at Justine's Ice Cream Parlour in St. Michaels, where general manager and head chef Tyler Heim whips up homemade, straight from scratch, flavors like Raspberry Oreo, and Butter Rum Crunch.

At the ripe old age of twenty, Tyler just wrapped up a course at Penn State where he learned about the science behind the creamy frozen concoction.

We asked him why he thinks the ice cream experience is such a special one.

"I think that it's really nice to be able to come down, into St. Michaels, and just come up and get a scoop with your family, really enjoy. And even afterwards! You're smiling, having a good time, and it's not an excuse, but it's a reason to connect, which I really like about it," says Tyler.

Interestingly, despite using all natural, local, and sometimes unconventional ingredients, Tyler says his homemade ice cream is actually cheaper to make than their non-homemade offerings.
