Eastern Shore Now Connected To MD Radio System

Posted: Updated:

EASTON, Md. (AP) - The Eastern Shore is now connected to a statewide radio system linking first responders in Maryland.

Gov. Martin O'Malley made a ceremonial call on Friday on the Maryland First Responders Interoperable Radio System Team.

There are 11 state agencies and three federal law enforcement agencies operating on the system. The entire Eastern Shore is now covered with the completion of the second phase of the project.

The initiative to connect Maryland's first responders on one secure radio system began in 2012. The first phase covered central Maryland, Kent County and key infrastructure patrolled by the Maryland Transportation Authority Police.

The entire Maryland system is expected to be complete by 2016.
