UPDATE: New Details Released About Dagsboro Home Invasion

Posted: Updated:

DAGSBORO, Del. - We have more information about Monday's Dagsboro home invasion, that ended with the suspect dead after crashing into a truck near Frankford.

Dagsboro Police Chief Floyd Toomey, Jr., tells 47 ABC that it all started just after 10:00 AM, when an elderly couple heard a noise coming from the laundry room of their Clayton Street home. The husband went to check out the noise, and was confronted by a white male, who was armed with two knives, and demanded money.

The wife became concerned when her husband did not immediately return, and also went to the laundry room. When she arrived, she saw her husband and the suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Charles Campbell, of Dagsboro. The wife was apparently able to pull her husband back into the home, and close the door.

Police say the suspect then made his way into the couple's garage through an unlocked outside door, where he found their red Ford Explorer with the keys inside. Campbell then reportedly fled from the home, while the victim was on the phone with dispatchers explaining what was happening at their home. Campbell reportedly fled in the SUV towards the Town of Dagsboro.

The Chief says he was able to find and ID the vehicle around Lingo Avenue, and started pursuing. Frankford Police also assisted in the chase. The pursuit reportedly wove through country roads for between 10 and 15 minutes, before Campbell reentered DuPont Highway.

Chief Toomey says they were on DuPont for around a quarter of a mile, near Frankford, before Campbell attempted to go Southbound in the Northbound lanes, and hit a Mack truck nearly head on. Campbell was ejected from the vehicle, and rushed to Atlantic General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The two elderly victims were reportedly unharmed during the incident, and the only thing taken from the home was their SUV. Police say Campbell got into the laundry room, through an unlocked door.
