UPDATE: Driver Of Stolen SUV Killed While Reportedly Fleeing From Police

Posted: Updated:

FRANKFORD, Del. - A crash involving a reportedly stolen SUV and a large truck is under investigation, after one man was killed.

Delaware State Police say it all started around 10:00 AM, as a stolen 2003 Ford Explorer was driving on southbound Route 113, near Frankford at a high rate of speed. Police say the driver, 26-year-old Charles Campbell, of Dagsboro, was the suspect in a home invasion that had just happened in Dagsboro, and was actively being pursued by both the Frankford and Dagsboro Police Departments.

At one point, Campbell reportedly lost control of the Explorer, which sent it over a concrete island, and through a grass median, into the northbound lanes, right in the path of a 2014 Mack 10-wheel cargo/box truck. The driver of the truck, 42-year-old Brian Black, of Harrington apparently tried to slow down, but wasn't able to avoid contact with the SUV, hitting it nearly head-on.

Police say that impact sent the Explorer in a counterclockwise direction, before it overturned several times, landing on its roof in the grass median. The Mack truck reportedly rotated counterclockwise and slid sideways, stopping across both northbound lanes.

According to the report, Campbell, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected onto the grass median. He was rushed from the scene to Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin, Maryland, where he was pronounced dead due to multiple traumatic injuries. Black was reportedly wearing his seat belt, and was uninjured in the crash.

At this time, the DSP Collision Reconstruction unit is still reportedly investigating the crash. Route 113 northbound near Cat Mans Road was closed for around four hours following the crash, while it was cleared and investigated.
