SEAFORD, Del. - An attempted burglary arrest reportedly turned to a water rescue last night in Seaford.

Police say at approximately 5:15 PM, officers made contact with a 19-year-old male who was on a bicycle in the area of Cannon Street in Seaford.  The victim was reportedly wanted on burglary and related charges.  As officers placed the victim in handcuffs, he was reportedly able to break away and flee on foot.

Police say the victim fled south on Cannon Street where he entered into the Nanticoke River.  As officers approached, the victim reportedly went under water at which time officers entered into the water in an unsuccessful effort to rescue him.  Police say the victim went below the water surface and was recovered by the Seaford Volunteer Fire Department Dive Team at approximately 5:50 PM.

The victim was reportedly transported to Nanticoke Hospital where he was admitted for treatment for respiratory impairment due to drowning. As of Saturday, police say the victim is in critical but stable condition.

The Seaford Police Criminal Investigations Division says they are currently investigating the incident.
