SALISBURY, Md. - A Delmar man is behind bars on attempted murder charges, after he apparently assaulted a woman into unconsciousness.

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says on Friday around 1:40 AM, a Deputy responded to an apartment complex on Beaglin Park Drive, for reports of a man beating a woman on the ground. Once on scene, the Deputy reportedly saw a 23-year-old William Donophan, standing over a woman, who was not moving.

Officials say when Donophan saw the Deputy, he tried to walk away and hide, but the Deputy approached, at which point Donophan started to flee on foot. According to the report, the Deputy chased Donophan through the complex, across Beaglin Park Drive, and onto Parkside High School property. The Deputy was apparently then able to catch up with Donophan, and take him into custody.

The victim, who was unconscious, was taken by ambulance to Peninsula Regional Medical Center, for head trauma. An investigation reportedly showed that Donophan hit and kicked the victim repeatedly in the head, to the point where she collapsed, and lost consciousness.

She is reportedly Donophan's girlfriend. Donophan was charged with attempted murder, assault 1st degree, reckless endangerment, and resist arrest. He is being held at the Wicomico County Detention Center on $250,000 bond.
