BERLIN, Md. - Calls for an overturned pickup truck leads to a DUI charge and the discovery of a handgun nearby.

Maryland State Police say on Tuesday, around 7:40 PM, they received multiple calls for a pickup truck that overturned approximately three times on Route 50 near Riddle Lane, near Walmart.

When troopers arrived they noticed the driver, 20-year-old Brandon Burkhard of Whaleyville, MD, under the influence of alcohol.

Troopers also say that a friend was following Burkhard in a separate vehicle and observed the crash. Witnesses also report seeing the friend, who is reported as a juvenile, pouring out beer from Burkhard's truck. Police then charged the juvenile with under age possession of alcoholic beverages.

Police also report that a loaded handgun was found in the roadway near the overturned vehicle. The gun is not registered to either Burkhard or his friend, and both deny owning the gun. The investigation into the handgun is still on-going at this time.

Burkhard was transported by ambulance to Peninsula Regional Medical Center where he agreed to submit to a blood test for alcohol content. Burkhard was charged with DUI and related charges.
